The Tenuta Larnianone is located in the hills close to Siena, just five kilometres from the city. Of the estate’s some 140 hectares, 19 of are under vine and 12 dedicated to olive trees, while crops and woods take up the remainder. The property enjoys a stupendous panoramic view, particularly of the famous city of the Palio.
The various terroirs represent a middle ground between the Siena-area crete, or clay soils, and the Chianti Classico zone. The estate features, in fact, a veritable checkerboard of gently-sloping hills, classic Chianti vineyards, and verdant holm oak and downy oak forest, so much so that, following the road that winds through the estate, one has the sensation of passing through different dimensions that in their turn shift through the seasons, changing colours, light, atmosphere.
We have been producing wine and olive oil since 1939. Most of the vineyards are officially dedicated to DOCG Chianti Colli Senesi denomination, with the predominant variety being sangiovese, along with colorino, canaiolo, trebbiano, and malvasia in the older vineyards as well. The newer vineyards have merlot and cabernet sauvignon.
All of the main vineyard operations, such as pruning, tying-up, leaf-pulling, cluster-thinning, are performed manually. Harvesting too is done manually, with each vineyard block picked at different time, to ensure optimal ripeness of the grapes brought into the cellar.
Every year we produce extravirgin olive oil from the olive groves that alternate with vineyards on the estate’s hills. The 1800 olive trees are trained to the traditional vase shape.
Within the estate are the main winemaking cellar, on the Santa Virginia farm, as well as other farm parcels where visitors can spend leisure time communing with nature just a few steps from the medieval walls of Siena, with its wealth of culture and romantic spots. |
